About Dr. Winkler
Dr. Gernot Winkler is an ophthalmologist in Santo Domingo, a fellowship-trained surgeon in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, with extensive experience in pediatric cataract surgery and keratoconus treatment.
A medical graduate of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), he completed his ophthalmology residency at Hospital Dr. Elías Santana and his fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at The Wright Foundation for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (Beverly Hills) and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles).
For more than a decade (2005–2016), he was a professor in the Department of Basic and Clinical Ophthalmology, teaching the residency program and the pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship at Hospital Dr. Elías Santana, and trained several generations of ophthalmologists.
He is a pioneer of riboflavin corneal cross-linking in the Dominican Republic. He has performed it since 2007, treating and following more than 200 keratoconus patients, a technique that halts the progression of the disease and can help patients avoid a corneal transplant.

Dr. Winkler is a pediatric ophthalmologist and evaluates children of all ages, including newborns when needed. Early vision screening is key to catching problems in time.
Strabismus is the misalignment of one or both eyes. It is corrected with treatment and, when necessary, with surgery. Dr. Winkler performs strabismus surgery in both children and adults.
It is a treatment with riboflavin and ultraviolet light that strengthens the cornea and halts the progression of keratoconus, helping patients avoid a transplant. Dr. Winkler has performed it since 2007.
