About Dr. Batlle Pichardo
Dr. Juan F. Batlle Pichardo is an ophthalmologist in Santo Domingo, founder and president of Centro Láser, and a globally recognized figure in cataract surgery and the development of ophthalmic technology.
A Suma Cum Laude graduate of Duke University and a Doctor of Medicine from its School of Medicine, he completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowships in retina and vitreous surgery (as Chief Resident) and in neuro-ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
He is the founder and president of Centro Láser and the founder of both the Ophthalmology Department at Hospital Dr. Elías Santana and the Dominican Republic Eye Bank. He has dedicated his career to bringing state-of-the-art ophthalmology to the country and to preventing blindness.
A world pioneer: co-developer of femtosecond laser cataract surgery (published in Science Translational Medicine), the Visian ICL phakic lens, and the MicroShunt for glaucoma. Author of numerous indexed publications and presentations at the world's leading congresses (AAO, ASCRS, ESCRS, PAAO).
Past President of the Dominican Society of Ophthalmology and of IAPB VISION2020 for Latin America, with a strong humanitarian commitment recognized by Duke University (Humanitarian Award) and the Carl Kupfer Award for the prevention of blindness.
