What Are Intravitreal Injections?

Intravitreal injections deliver medication directly into the eye, into the vitreous cavity, to treat retinal disease. They are the single most important treatment in modern retina care, and they have completely changed the outlook for conditions that used to lead straight to blindness.

The most widely used medication is anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor). It blocks the substance responsible for abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid leakage in the macula, the two mechanisms behind central vision loss in many retinal diseases.

What Conditions Do They Treat?

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD): stops the bleeding and leakage from abnormal vessels beneath the macula
  • Diabetic macular edema: reduces macular swelling caused by diabetes
  • Retinal vein occlusions: treats the edema that follows venous blood clots

  4. Injection: the medication is delivered in seconds through the pars plana, a safe entry point in the eye.
  5. Check and discharge: we confirm everything looks right, and you go home the same day.

The whole procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Recovery

Recovery is quick. In the first few hours you might notice:

  • A gritty, sandy feeling that eases with artificial tears
  • A small red spot on the white of the eye (subconjunctival hemorrhage), harmless
  • Slightly blurry vision that clears up within hours

A lot less than most people expect. We use anesthetic eye drops and, in some cases, a small amount of additional numbing on the surface of the eye. The procedure takes just a few minutes, and most patients describe mild pressure, not pain. Afterward you might feel some grittiness or irritation for a few hours, which goes away with artificial tears.

It depends on your condition and how your retina responds. Treatment usually starts with a loading phase of several monthly injections, followed by maintenance doses spaced out based on your response, tracked with OCT imaging at every visit. Most retinal conditions are chronic, so this is ongoing management, not a one-time fix. The goal is to protect your vision over the long run.

Always in an operating room or a room with sterile conditions, never in a regular exam room, because strict asepsis is what keeps infection risk down. We clean and disinfect the eye, place a lid speculum to keep it open, and deliver the medication in a matter of seconds. That strict sterile protocol is why serious complications are so rare.

Aftercare is minimal: avoid rubbing your eye, skip swimming and pools for a few days, and use whatever drops we prescribe. You can go back to your normal routine pretty much the same day. Watch for a short list of rare warning signs (severe pain, worsening redness, vision loss) and call us right away if any of them show up.
