Specialized clinic

Dry Eye Spa

Diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and comprehensive follow-up for dry eye syndrome and ocular surface conditions.

A clinic dedicated
only to dry eye

Dry eye syndrome affects 30% of adults, and its impact on quality of life is often underestimated. The Dry Eye Spa at Centro Láser focuses exclusively on diagnosing and treating this condition and other ocular surface disorders.

We combine state-of-the-art diagnostic technology with treatment protocols tailored by a team specialized in cornea and ocular surface. We evaluate the tear film, the eyelids, the meibomian glands, and the conjunctiva with objective measurements, so you can see how you respond to treatment in real numbers, not just subjective impressions.

Signs that
you should get evaluated

If any of these sound familiar, an evaluation at the Spa can clarify the diagnosis and open up treatment options you haven't explored yet.

Persistent symptoms

Burning, itching, excessive tearing, or a foreign-body sensation that doesn't improve with artificial tears.

Dry eye before and after surgery

Optimizing the ocular surface before refractive, cataract, or other eye surgery.

Sjögren's syndrome

Primary, or associated with rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Meibomian gland dysfunction

Blockage or disruption of the glands that produce the oily layer of the tear film.

Ocular rosacea

Chronic eyelid inflammation associated with skin rosacea.

Blepharitis and Demodex

Inflammation of the eyelid margin, including infestation by the Demodex folliculorum mite.

Chalazion and stye

Recurrent eyelid abscesses or cysts that need specialized management.

Conjunctivochalasis

Redundant conjunctiva that interferes with the tear film.

Diagnosis
with objective measurements

Dry eye diagnosis has evolved: we no longer rely on the Schirmer test and fluorescein alone. Today we measure osmolarity, inflammation, the lipid layer, and gland anatomy with precision.

SPEED and OSDI questionnaires

Standardized symptom assessment to quantify severity and track it objectively.

Detailed clinical exam

Assessment of the eyelid margin, lashes, glands, and ocular surface under a slit lamp.

TearLab osmolarity

Measures the salt concentration in the tear film, an objective marker of dry eye.

InflammaDry

Detects MMP-9, a biomarker of ocular surface inflammation.

Optimetrics Idra

Non-invasive analysis of the lipid layer, tear meniscus, break-up time, and infrared meibography.

Quantel Lacrydiag

A complementary ocular surface diagnostic platform with high-resolution imaging.

Schirmer test

Measures baseline tear production.

Vital stains

Fluorescein and rose bengal to assess epithelial integrity and corneal filaments.

Every evaluation ends with an objective score report of the type and grade of dry eye, which serves as a baseline for measuring how you respond to treatment.

Treatments
stepped to your case

Protocols follow the grade and type of dry eye. The goal is sustainable optimization of the ocular surface, not just temporary symptom relief.

Specialized procedures

  • Meibomian gland warming and expression. A stepped protocol of 1 to 3+ sessions depending on severity (mild, moderate, severe).
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Quantel C.Stim equipment built specifically for dry eye. 2 sessions two weeks apart, repeated every 6 months. Especially indicated for ocular rosacea.
  • Punctal plugs. Temporary or permanent occlusion of tear drainage to keep tears on the ocular surface.
  • Punctal cauterization. A surgical alternative to plugs for selected cases.
  • Gland probing. Probing of meibomian glands with stenosis or blockage confirmed on meibography.
  • Chalazion or abscess drainage. Outpatient management of eyelid cysts and abscesses.
  • Lash cleaning and home kit. An eyelid-hygiene protocol with professional products (Lid Clean, Ocusoft).
  • Corneal EDTA chelation. For band-shaped calcific keratopathy.

Topical treatments

  • Latest-generation lubricants, preservative-free
  • Topical anti-inflammatories
  • Preservative-free topical methylprednisolone
  • Autologous serum (prepared from your own blood)
  • Topical insulin
  • Ivermectin and metronidazole for Demodex

Supportive care

  • Warming gel masks for use at home
  • Omega-3 supplementation
  • Environmental advice (humidifiers, screen breaks)
